Ahmet Muhtar Bej Zogolli, or Ahmet Zogu, was born in 1895 to a powerful chief of a feudal clan in the Mati region and his mother, an heiress of the old Albanian nobility. He studied in Constantinople, returning in 1911 to become governor. During the First World War, he fought alongside the Austro-Hungarians, who appointed him colonel before his return to Albania in 1919. He then entered politics and, after putting down a rebellion, became Minister of the Interior. Then, as general and commander-in-chief of the army, he developed his power and became prime minister in 1922, while marrying the daughter of Shefqet Verlaci, leader of the conservative party. In 1924, he resigned following a financial scandal, but soon returned, with the help of the Yugoslavs, to stage a coup. He proclaimed the Republic and was elected President for 7 years in 1925. A strong leader, he modernised and Europeanised the country, with the help of Mussolini's fascist Italy. On 1 September 1928, Ahmet Zogu, after amending the Constitution, proclaimed himself King of the Albanians under the name of Zog I.
