Lot no. 505
BERRETTINO GROUND MAJOLICA ALBARELLO, FAENZA KILN (CA' PIROTA), FIRST HALF OF THE XVI CENTURY with garland decoration and stylised motifs centred by an emblem with SM initials; minor wear and firing defects H 18.5 cm, diam. 14.2 cm A BERRETTINO FAENZA ALBARELLO, FIRST HALF 16TH CENTURY; SLIGHTLY WORN, FEW FIRING DEFECTS This albarello, and the one in the next lot, finds a precise match in a corpus of 16th century Faenza work studied in depth by Ravanelli Guidotti in 1998 (C. Ravanelli Guidotti, Thesaurus di opere della tradizione di Faenza, Faenza 1998, p. 314 passim). The relationship with the formerly Cora vase now in the Museo Internazionale della Ceramica in Faenza (inv. 21297) is particularly close, where the decorative layout goes so far as to use the characteristic and elegant heart motif as a field for the monogrammed emblem; for the Ca' Pirota (and Pietro Paterni known as Pirotto) see Ravanelli Guidotti again in 1998 (ibid., p. 24 passim).
