A NAPLES MAIOLICA ALBARELLO, 1697; SOME FIRING DEFECTS, CRAQUELURE A CRACK, AND A RESTORATION
Our maiolica is part of the well-known pharmaceutical set from the apothecary's shop of the Certosa di San Martino in Naples, known in examples bearing different dates (mostly from 1697 to 1700), and characterised by the scene of St. Martin on horseback donating part of his cloak to the poor man, painted by a painter of considerable skill, who was documented by Donatone in 2000 as Giuseppe Canonico, active in Naples but trained in Castelli (G. Donatone, in R. Ausenda, Museo d'Arti Applicate, le Ceramiche, Tomo I, Milan 2000, p. 323, no. 361: but see also T. Fittipaldi, Museo di San Martino. Ceramiche, Naples 1992, I, pp. 237-241 and AAV.VV. La donazione Galeazzo Cora, Ceramiche dal Medioevo al XIX secolo, Milan 1985, no. 53).
