A pupil of Joseph-Benoît Suvée and then Jacques-Louis David, Albert Gregorius was renowned for his neoclassical portraits. In 1814, he won a medal at the Salon, where he exhibited from 1812 to 1835. He painted portraits of Napoleon, Louis XVIII, Charles X and Louis-Philippe. In 1835, he returned to Belgium after thirty years in France. He became director of the Bruges Academy and taught artists such as Ford Madox Brown.
