Marquet's long abode in Marseille was interrupted in 1916 by news from Paris that the art dealer Druet, who sold works for him, had died. Marquet must return to the metropolis twice to fulfill the remainder of his contract. In between, he works a good deal in Marseille.
He finds inspiration for his work in the hustle and bustle of the port of Marseille, which he can observe from his studio. Water and bridges: this combination always fascinates the artist. Other artists of his time typically omitted from their idealized depictions of the old port the Pont transbordeur, the transporter bridge that has connected the Quai du Port and the Quai de Rive Neuve since 1905, finding it a disturbing pile of iron. Here it is the focus. As early as 1912, Marquet had captured the Pont transbordeur of Rouen in several paintings.
