In-folio, full green morocco binding, ribbed spine, cold-stamped fillets on spine, cold-stamped roulettes on covers, title Album 1836 gilt on first cover, richly decorated gilt roulettes on flyleaves, moiré silk endpapers on flyleaves, gilt edges (period binding). Composite album comprising 179 engravings, 83 of which are in colour, signed and pasted down with handwritten legends in ink. The views depict sites and towns in Switzerland, many of which concern the Alps (Le Gothard, the Bernese Alps, Chamonix and Mont-Blanc, etc.). The first page includes two watercolour and gouache aquatints depicting an avalanche on Mont Marengo at the Grand Saint-Bernard (20 x 15 cm) and the ascent of Mr de Saussure to the summit of Montblanc in the month of August 1785 [sic] by Samuel Grundmann (15.5 x 11.5 cm). Among the most notable views are the Schwyz avenue towards the Mythen by F. Leuthold (watercolour aquatint, circa 1830, 17 x 13 cm), Amsteg on the Gotthard road by J.-J. Wetzel (watercolour aquatint, 27.5 x 19.5 cm), Le pont du Diable by Straub (watercolour lithograph, 14 x 17.5 cm), Galerie d'trou d'Ury towards Andermatt (watercolour aquatint, ca. 1830, 17 x 12 cm), L'hospice du Grimsel (watercolour aquatint by J.-J. Wetzel, 1825, 27.5 x 19 cm), Cascade du Reichenbach par Winterlin (watercolour aquatint, ca. 1830, 17.5 x 13 cm), Vue du glacier de Rosenlui (watercolour aquatint (17.5 x 13 cm), Genève, panorama taken from the cercle de la Cloche aux Pâquis (watercolour aquatint after Alexandre Faizan-Counis, ca. 1830, 40 x 24 cm), View of the entrance to the Chamouni valley and the Gouté dome by Samuel Grundmann (watercolour aquatint and gummed, ca. 1820, 32 x 23 cm), etc. From the library of Prince Adalbert of Prussia (1811-1873), cousin of Emperor Wilhelm I of Prussia, with his bookplate. A tear on a page of about ten cm in the margin (does not affect an engraving), rare soiling on some engravings.
