After the dissolution of the Cobra group in 1951, Pierre Alechinsky moved to Paris. Although he was introduced to engraving during his time at La Cambre from 1944 to 1948, it was with Stanley William Hayter, in studio 17, that the painter developed "[his] appetite for copper and acid". Between 1952 and 1953, following the example of Max Ernst and Yves Tanguy fifteen years earlier, Alechinsky perfected his technique there, discovering in particular the process of polychrome printing from a single plate perfected by Hayter, in which the variation in colour is based on the difference in viscosity between the inks. In this place of learning and exchange, Alechinsky invited Corneille and Hérold and met Miró, Giacometti and Calder, as well as his future assistant Jean Clerté. From 1967 to 1983, Clerté printed almost all of Alechinsky's etchings, working with him to establish the definitive state of the copperplates.
