Alessandro Salucci (1590 - 1655) - View of Campo Vaccino in Rome Oil on canvas 101 x 202 cm The painting is attributed to Alessandro Salucci on the expertise of Prof. Maurizio Marini, a leading figure in the panorama of Roman vedutistica of the 17th century. As highlighted in the expertise, the work fits fully into the "vedutistic genre not strictly bound to the documentary image according to the taste of the Nordic painters active, for the most part, in Italy, in Rome", distinguished by a freer and more fantastic conception of urban space. In affinity with Jan Miel and the tradition of the so-called "bamboccianti", Salucci in fact availed himself of the collaboration of a "figurista", identifiable, according to Marini, in Jan Miel (Antwerp, 1599 - Turin, 1663), an artist linked to the circle of Pieter van Laer.In the specific case of the Veduta del Campo Vaccino in Rome, the artist "depicted [...] keeping to the more incisive image of urban space with his serrato animated by Jan Miel's so-called 'macchiette'". The interpretation, however, is not limited to a topographical restitution, but proposes a scenic and atmospheric reading of the place, through a calibrated luministic orchestration and a carefully meditated perspective construction.Marini emphasises how Salucci, while looking to models such as Claude Lorrain (Claude Gellée), "has emphasised the more everyday character of the 'Campo Vaccino', changing the point of view in favour of a perspective view from below, i.e. from 'above the door', as well as the atmospheric effect with the clouds slightly reddened by the early sunset that also lengthens the shadows on the urban plane". A 'subtle scenic magic' thus characterises the composition, in line with other views by the artist. The work is placed in the moment of full maturity of Salucci, active in Rome and documented from 1628; in 1634-35 he is registered as a member of the Accademia di San Luca. His relationship with Claude Lorrain is "significant for his own scenic-colouristic evolution", as the scholar recalls. The painting is accompanied by expertise by Prof. Maurizio Marini. The work is presented in a 20th-century gilded wooden frame
