ALEXANDRE BENOIS (1870-1960)
Costume sketch for a retired soldier in Igor Stravinsky's ballet 'Petrouchka
signed in pencil 'Alexandre Benois' (lower left), inscribed and numbered in pencil
watercolour, ink and pencil on paper
30.7 x 22 cm
The ballet Petrouchka is set in the lively atmosphere of a pre-Lenten fair (Maslenitsa) in nineteenth-century St Petersburg. Stravinsky composed it for his second collaboration with Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, inspired by traditional street puppets magically brought to life by a magician (Charlatan). The original choreography was by Michel Fokine, and the sets and costumes by Alexandre Benois, who helped Stravinsky write the libretto.
First performed in Paris in 1911, Petrouchka has become one of Alexandre Benois's most important works. The ballet was frequently staged again and, between 1911 and 1957, Alexandre Benois redesigned the sets and costumes for fourteen different productions. In later versions, he often inscribed his drawings with the names of the dancers who played the lead roles.
