Valentina Anker groups Alexandre Calame's oeuvre into different stylistic phases in her catalogue raisonné. She recognises the phase between 1849 and 1852 as one in which the artist romantically exaggerated nature, concentrating primarily on vertical compositions. Anker cites the painting offered here as the first exemplary work from this creative period. While the foreground with its romantic-looking trees still harks back to earlier phases in Calame's work, the towering mountain peaks in the background already appear to be a harbinger of his later works (Anker 1987, p. 155, with illus.).
