Lot no. 84
Alexandre CHATRIAN (1826-1890). 3 L.A.S. with autograph MANUSCRITS, [Le Raincy] 1878-1879, to Henri MARECHAL 18 pages various sizes Working manuscripts, with erasures and corrections for La Taverne des Trabans, comic opera on a libretto by Jules Barbier and A. Chatrian, music by Henri MARECHAL, first performed at the Opéra-Comique on 31 December 1881
31 January 1878: he is appointed mayor of his commune [Le Raincy] and is overwhelmed: "Look at this: Chatrian with a tricolour tie around his belly and marrying people; it's the punishment of l'Ami Fritz", but he got back to work and sent manuscripts and corrections as he went along: he attached several scenes from Act III, the "definitive refrain of the Chanson du Dieu Soleil", the Chanson de Johannès and the Chanson de Mikel, etc. The collaboration was sometimes difficult: "For the first time in my life, I've been able to work on the chorus of the Chanson de Johannès and the Chanson de Mikel. - Collaboration was sometimes difficult: "For God's sake, don't ask me for any more changes"; and about the first version of Act 3: "Triturez tout ce que vous voudrez, ça m'est égal"... - In January 1879, he sent another 2 pages for the end of Act 3: "Voilà! Never mind if you're not happy! I won't worry about it any more"...
A L.A.S. is attached, Paris 2 November 1875 to Michel LEVY (2 p.in-12), asking "where to find the air de la houpé and the words and music of the Kalé-lied" which he needs for his play about Rabbi David Sichel; the announcement of his death; the issue of L'Éclipse devoted to Erckmann-Chatrian (17 May 1868); 2 l.a.s. from Jeanne Chatrian, the author's daughter-in-law, to Pierre Varenne and 2 letters from the S.A.C.D. concerning the payment of royalties to Mme Chatrian (1941).
