Alexandre DELATOUR (1780-1858). Young woman playing the harpsichord or pianoforte, seated three-quarter to the left, in a black dress with gigot sleeves, fur stole around her neck, large earrings and chignon-tresse, white curtain raised at the bottom right over a pottery piece, circa 1825-1830. Oval miniature on ivory, signed on the right: Alex/ Delatour. The score reads: JE JURAIS DE ... The name of the maker of the instrument has yet to be deciphered. A handwritten identification in pen has been suggested on the verso: "Mme de Mirbel" with whom this musician bears a vague resemblance. (Minor mould, very small gap at the bottom, glass slightly pitted). Height 10.8 cm; Width: 8.7 cm. Oval gilt brass ring (Height: 12 cm; Width: 11.6 cm). Total weight: 77 g. A pupil of Autissier and Augustin in Paris, where he exhibited at the Salon until 1810, Delatour went on to become miniature painter to William I and William II, sovereigns of the Netherlands, and one of Belgium's leading miniaturists. *An ivory specimen of Elephantidae spp (I/A) pre-Convention, prior to 1 July 1947 and therefore compliant with EC Regulation 338/97 of 09/12/1996 art.2-Wmc, and prior to 1 July 1975 and therefore compliant with the French decrees of 4 May 2017 and January 2022.
