Alexandre Markelbach (1824 Antwerp - 1906 Brussels-Schaerbeek/Schaarbeek) Baroque crossbowmen with victorious king after a shooting competition Large-format work by Markelbach, who initially painted historicising genre scenes. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp under Philippe Jacques van Bree and from 1845 to 1848 in Munich under Wilhelm Kaulbach. He then returned to Antwerp before settling in Brussels in 1858, where he mainly painted religious motifs. Markelbach became a full member of the Royal Academy of Belgium in 1889.
