Lot no. 1641
Alexandre Paul Joseph Véron (1773 Paris - after 1838) attr; Pair of landscapes with merry rococo company Counterparts. Landscapes painted in a cheerful, pastel-toned colouring under a fragrant cloudy sky, enlivened by a rich staffage of figures in a soft, fine style. While one cabinet piece depicts a couple dancing with other gallant couples and two musicians, in the second painting a fine lady has her fortune told by a palm reader while her companions from courtly society chat and skirmish in the countryside. Véron, also known as Véron-Bellecourt, was a pupil of Jacques-Louis David and Gerard van Spaendonck and regularly took part in the Paris Salon exhibitions between 1801 and 1838. He created history, genre and flower pieces and also made a name for himself as an outstanding copyist. In addition to works by Carel van Falens and Jean-Baptiste Joseph Pater, he also created charming works after Jean-Antoine Watteau, such as this inverted copy of the well-known work "La Contredanse". Oil on canvas, relined. 32 and 32.5 cm x 46.5 cm respectively. Frame. Provenance: North German private collection. Two landscapes attributed to Alexandre Paul Joseph Véron (1773 - after 1838), partly after Jean-Antoine Watteau. Oil on canvas, relined.
