Our painting is a study for one of the three monumental paintings adorning the doorways of the chapel at the Château de l'Orfrasière in Nouzilly (Indre-et-Loire). This commission from Countess Robert de Wendel, née Marie-Antoinette de Gramedo (1850-1917) was an opportunity for Alexandre Séon to combine his talent with a hitherto unexplored Christian iconography. In addition to the Mater Dei, the artist has created representations of a crucified Jesus and an Ave Maria, as well as a Way of the Cross in fourteen small stained glass windows.

Our painting is a study for one of the three monumental paintings adorning the doorways of the chapel at the Château de l'Orfrasière in Nouzilly (Indre-et-Loire). This commission from Countess Marthe Robert de Wendel (1825-1908) was an opportunity for Alexandre Séon to combine his talent with a hitherto unexplored Christian iconography. In addition to the Mater Dei, the artist created representations of a crucified Jesus and an Ave Maria, as well as a Way of the Cross spread over fourteen small stained glass windows.
