Rare proof with inverted red-green colours between the background and the mask. The result of a competition to announce a ball for Russian émigrés in Paris, this poster is Alexey Brodovitch's first published work. Andy Grundberg writes: "[this poster] suggests [Brodovitch's] own influences and future directions. The graphic design, the inversion from light to dark of the form, the subject and the background not only suggest the negative/positive process of photography, but also symbolically represent the process of masking; exchanging one's identity for another in reverse." Andy Grundberg, "Brodovitch", New York 1989, p.24.
