Active in the Urbino area, Alfonso Patanazzi was descended from a family of ceramists working mainly for the ducal court, while his father Vincenzo was a painter and decorator. The artist's production was clearly influenced by the examples of Federico Barocci, Claudio Ridolfi and, during his maturity, the Caravaggism of Giovanni Francesco Guerrieri. This is particularly evident when looking at the panel presented here, which Ambrosini Massari judged to be of 'exquisite beauty and quality', depicting the Saint in the guise of a 'portrait from life' and marked by a sincere naturalism.
