The work, innovative for its time, demonstrates the artist's mastery of representing balance and movement. The plaster version of the group was exhibited at the Salon of 1886, then at the Universal Exhibition of 1889, where it was awarded a gold medal. He produced a monumental bronze for the State, which was destroyed in 1940, and published reductions by the founders Barbedienne and Siot.
