Lot no. 1625
Alfred Henri Darjou (1832 Paris - 1873 ibid.)
At prayer
A wide, hilly, barren landscape under a loosely cloudy, pastel-coloured evening sky, in the foreground of which three Arabs have gathered on a small hill, piously absorbed and turned towards Mecca, to pray. A charming genre painting by Darjou, who was trained by his father, the portrait painter Victor Darjou, and Léon Cogniet. He made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1853 and from then on participated there annually with his genre pieces, landscapes and portraits. In addition to painting, he produced numerous illustrations and caricatures for weekly newspapers such as "L'Illustration" and "Le Monde illustré", as well as for the well-known satirical magazine "Le Charivari". Oil on canvas, mounted. Signed and dated lower right. (18)69. 46 cm x 28.7 cm. Frame.
Oil on relined canvas. Signed and dated (18)69.
