Lot no. 74
Alfred MANESSIER (1911-1993). "Night Flight - Suburbs", 1987. Watercolour on paper signed lower left. 20.7 x 24.2 cm. Inventory of the Galerie de France "AM d51". Framed under glass, white baguette frame. Gallery label on reverse. Provenance: Acquired from the Galerie de France in the 1990s. We would like to thank Mrs Christine MANESSIER, the artist's daughter, who is in charge of the preparatory archives for the artist's Catalogue Raisonné, for confirming the authenticity of this work and for the valuable corrections and information that we have taken the liberty of transcribing below: "I must point out a word error in the title. The exact title is: Night Flight - Suburb and not "Baulieu", the title having been incorrectly transcribed on the back of the Galerie de France label. This night flight corresponded to a specific whirlwind trip, a round trip from Paris-Roissy/Saint-Étienne, to bring guests to the opening, followed by a sumptuous dinner, of the inaugural exhibition of the Musée d'art moderne de Saint-Étienne on 9 December 1987. On the way back, I remember my father being particularly taken by the beauty of the flight over the Paris suburbs at 2am, just before landing at Roissy airport. This watercolour was painted in the aftermath of that lightning trip.
