Studies for the monument to Dante Alighieri, pair of bronze high reliefs, by A. Pina
19.29 x 31.1 in.
On the strength of his success at the 1922 Venice Biennale, Alfred Pina was commissioned by the Italian government in 1925 to create a major monument to Dante. Although the project was abandoned, it is best known through the artist's sketches and models preserved in the Musée de la Charité-sur-Loire. These two reliefs depicting a procession of eight figures, inscribed in the folds of the draped shroud, were to adorn the sides of the tomb destined to house Dante's body.
