Lot no. 1775
Alfred Roloff (1879 Lassan - 1951 Rade near Rendsburg)
Grazing horses in the meadow
A large herd of horses grazing in a peaceful atmosphere on a deep green meadow with deciduous trees and a gently flowing river under a loosely cloudy sky. Extremely lively, naturalistic depiction of animals by Roloff, who acquired an outstanding plastic-realistic technique through detailed studies of nature. The artist, also known as "Horse Roloff", developed a particular mastery in the vivid depiction of horses in motion. The flight from fire and powerful forces of nature such as thunderstorms and storms is an often recurring motif in his works. After studying at the Berlin Academy of Art in 1896-1901, Roloff took an active part in the Great Berlin Art Exhibitions and regularly showed his works, which also included a series of battle and war scenes, at the Great German Art Exhibition at the Haus der Kunst in Munich. Early on, he worked as an illustrator for the Verlagshaus für Volksliteratur und Kunst in Berlin-Kreuzberg and soon attracted the attention of other renowned publishing houses. As a sought-after and successful illustrator, he created a large number of title pages for the then extremely popular penny dreadfuls. After the Second World War, Roloff lived in seclusion in Rade near Rendsburg. Oil on canvas; signed l. and r.; labels with exhibition numbers of the (Great) Berlin Art Exhibition 1910 and 1920 on verso. 100 cm x 120 cm. Frame.
