The Berlin portrait painter made his debut as early as 1888 at the Academy exhibition, to which he subsequently exhibited several times. The Great Berlin Art Exhibition of 1904 also brought him his final breakthrough as a portraitist - the aristocracy and upper middle classes commissioned his portraits, and from 1906 Schwarz was court painter to Wilhelm II and his family.
