In 1816, a squadron commanded by Admiral Sir Edward Pellew was sent to Algiers where it arrived on 27 August, accompanied by a small Dutch squadron. It demanded the release of the detained British consul and over 1,000 Christian slaves, including many sailors captured by the Algerians. Receiving no response, the fleet bombarded Algiers. Pellew was subsequently created Viscount Exmouth.
