The battle of Isly on 14 August 1844, near Isly on the Algerian-Moroccan border, was the last confrontation of the French expedition against the Moroccan army. Morocco, where Abd el-Kader had taken refuge, declared war on France to prevent it from colonising Algeria despite the Treaty of Tafna. On 6 August 1844, Prince de Joinville bombarded Tangier and Mogador. During the night of 15 to 16 August, Governor General Bugeaud, having assembled all his forces, which amounted to only 11,000 men, moved against the Moroccan camp established at the position of Djarf el-Akhdar, a short distance from Oujda, on the right bank of the Oued Isly. The Sultan was unable to disperse the French troops grouped in a diamond formation. Bugeaud brought out the cavalry, which dispersed the Moroccan cavalry, and then the infantry, which scattered into the ravines. Eleven cannon, eighteen flags, all the Moroccan tents, including Sidi-Mohammed's richly furnished one, and supplies of all kinds were recovered. The Moroccans lost 800 men. Marshal Bugeaud was made Duke of Isly following this victory.
