Abd el-Kader ben Muhieddine was born on 6 September 1808 near Mascara and died on 26 May 1883 in Damascus, Syria. A politician and military leader, he resisted the expeditionary corps of African troops for fifteen years (1832-1847) during France's conquest of Algeria.
