Henri d'Orléans (1822-1897), known as the Duc d'Aumale, was one of King Louis-Philippe's sons. A politician, he was Governor General of Algeria in 1847-1848, following in the footsteps of Marshal Bugeaud. Immensely wealthy after the compensation payments of the French Revolution, he was the most important bibliophile and art collector of his time. Without posterity, he bequeathed his Chantilly estate and his precious collections to the Institut.
