ALIBERT (Jean-Louis). Description of skin diseases observed at the Hôpital Saint-Louis and exposition of the best methods used for their treatment. Second edition, with appendices. Paris, Jeunet, 1828. 2 volumes large in-8, purple half calf, smooth spines with beautiful gilt decoration of caissons and arabesques (R.D. Lesauvage). 2 ff, XLIX pp, 319 pp, 1f (2nd state of p. 149) , 56 coloured plates - 2 ff, 584 pp. The first edition appeared in 1806 in folio format. This second edition is augmented by some twenty notes: Examen clinique des teignes, pliques, dartres, éphélides, lèpres, ichthyoses, syphilides, scrophules et psorides, par le médecin chef de l'hôpital Saint-Louis. Jean-Louis Alibert (1768-1837) is regarded as the founder of dermatology in France. As the first physician to Louis XVI and Charles X, he set up clinics for skin diseases at the Hôpital Saint Louis. He also helped to found the Académie de Médecine. A fine copy in a romantically decorated binding by Lesauvage (a bookbinder from Coutances). A few plates are foxed.
