ALIGHIERO BOETTI 1940-1994 Aerei 1978 circa Ballpoint pen on paper mounted on canvas composed by three indivisible panels. Artwork accompanied by certificate issued by 'Archivio Alighiero Boetti', Rome, under the number 9483 dated 19/06/2019. 14.76 x 32.13 in. This work is the synthesis of two important recurring themes in the production of Boetti, the Biro pen and the airplanes. Two series of works in which the execution is delegated to third parties, but with a greater awareness by the artist of being the director and being able for making interactions that are not entirely predictable, and it is precisely this unpredictability that makes those works so valuable and unique. Boetti commissions a designer to create models of precise airplanes, seen from every perspective and angle, and then asks third parties, and perhaps fourth ones, to fill in the sky with Bic ballpoint pens. The result here is a triptych in which an explosion of airplanes seems to come to meet us in a sky/sea of blue ink full of waves. Just referring to this series of works, the artist declared: "It is an ideal imaginary sky, dreamed (even if my planes are real plans, that in reality exist and fly every day! They go everywhere, in every direction, and they travel around the world)... one day it will be possible. The planes will no longer be driven by men but by robots, and everything will be calculated.
