Allach figure "Old Fritz on horseback". Rocaille-shaped curved base plate. Frederick II, King of Prussia, known as Frederick the Great or "Old Fritz", seated on his Condé flying grey horse, his head turned to the right above an arabesque-patterned saddlecloth in light relief. Dressed in Prussian blue and red uniform with bicorne hat, wearing the breast star of the Order of the Black Eagle. Holding the reins and a stick in his left hand, his right hand resting on his thigh. Based on a sculpture by Emanuel Bardou (1744 - 1818). Polychrome painting. Designed by Prof. Theodor Kärner. Signed "Prof. Th. Kärner". Model no. 94, professionally restored in places; impressed manufacturer's mark in the octagon. H. 29 cm.
The animal sculptor and porcelain modeller Theodor Kärner (1884 Hohenberg an der Eger - 1966 Munich) trained in his home town at the local porcelain manufactory C.M. Hutschenreuther. He later went to Munich, where he was a guest student of the famous animal painter Heinrich von Zügel at the Academy of Fine Arts. He worked as a porcelain modeller for Nymphenburg and Rosenthal in Selb and from 1936 for the manufactory in Munich-Allach. A few animal models were executed in bronze. In April 1938 he was appointed professor at the Munich Art Academy.
