Lot no. 879
Allegorical Meissen figure "The Dawn". Raised rocaille base in relief. Antique-style young woman standing on a cloud bank in the form of Aurora, the goddess of dawn, messenger of the day and victor over the night. Her long, wavy, finely modelled hair is crowned by a radiant diadem and covered with a white veil patterned with gold stars. Sculptured lilies, roses and bunches of ears of corn grow upwards to her side. Polychrome painting with rich, partially etched gold decoration. Designed by Emmerich Andresen, 1893, model no. P 105, remainder; crossed swords mark. H. 41 cm. Expressive depiction of the goddess approaching with a veil fluffed up by the wind and a golden diadem in the form of sunbeams symbolising the beginning of day. The sculptor and porcelain sculptor Emmerich Andresen (1843 - 1902) created numerous allegorical figures in a classical-realist manner, which display stylistic characteristics typical of large-scale sculpture. Andresen also produced the allegories of Evening, Night and Day in 1893. Cf. Jedding, Meissen Porcelain of the 19th and 20th Centuries, p. 141; Thieme-Becker, vol. I, p. 491. An allegorical porcelain figure of the dawn modelled by E. Andresen. Restored. Crossed swords mark. Meissen. Circa 1900.
