'Allegory of the Earth' Oil on canvas.  152 x 80 cm. This splendid canvas shows the allegory of one of the four elements by an unknown Peruvian painter, and would have been part of a series of four: earth, air, fire and water. The allegorical series formed by four personifications -the continents, the seasons, or the elements- were a particularly widespread typology throughout the eighteenth century. This one, specifically, shows an allegory in the style of a portrait captured in the foreground and with all the attributes in the margin, to the side, at her feet, or held by her. Personified by the goddess Ceres, she carries a garland of flowers, grapes, exotic fruits, wheat..., reflecting the interest of the time in the natural world and the exploration of new lands. These types of artworks were masterpieces full of life and widely used for the decoration of palaces.  A complex and detailed composition full of symbolism, in a naturalistic and harmonious environment in the foreground.   The artis aims to represent the objects and textures to the maximum detail, with vivid and contrasting colors that highlight the beauty and vitality of nature.
