Maximilian I is Count Palatine of the Rhine, Duke of Upper and Lower Bavaria and Prince Elector of the Holy Roman Empire, all these titles are recalled on the right of our copy. After being invaded by the Swedes during the Thirty Years' War, peace gave the Duke the opportunity to fortify his capital and residence. In 1648, the Treaty of Westphalia confirmed the peace and the electoral dignity of the prince, and Bavaria retained the Upper Palatinate.
