The principality of Bayreuth had been divided between the Brandenburg-Bayreuth and Brandenburg-Kulmbach families since 1655, before being reunited in 1726 in favour of the Brandenburg-Bayreuth family. On 20 January 1769, Frederick Christian of Brandenburg-Bayreuth died childless and his principality passed to Charles Alexander of Brandenburg-Ansbach.
