The Imperials had to evacuate Alsace in 1632 and moved the government to the strategically located fortified town of Breisach. On 7 July 1733, the two generals, Count Palatine (Rheingraf) Otto and Margrave Frederick of Baden-Durlach, commander of the Swedish troops, laid siege to Brisach. This siege coin was minted by the Austrian commander of the besieged town, Hannibal von Schauenburg, using objects and precious metals requisitioned from the town's bourgeoisie.
