GERMANY - ALLEMAGNE Brunswick-Lünebourg-Calenberg-Hanover, George III (1760-1820). Gold medal in the module of 12 ducats, creation of the Economic Society of Brunswick-Lünebourg in Celle, by J. F. K. Claus MDCCLXV (1765), Hanover. Av. GEORGIVS TERTIVS PROMOTOR SALVTIS PVBLICAE. Laurelled bust right; below, signature CLAUS. Rv. SOCIETAS OECONOMICA ELECTORALIS BRVNSW: LVNEBVRGENSIS / MVNERA DILIGENTIAE. In a rural landscape with the sun rising, an inverted cornucopia; in the exergue: INSTITVTA CELLIS / D. IV. IVNII. MDCCLXV. BM EM.53 - MET 2023.569.219 - Forrer VII p.184 ; Gold - 41,8 g - 42,5 mm - 12 h NGC UNC DETAILS OBV DAMAGE (8585413-007). With a fine corner break to the right (present on all examples seen in gold). Minimal marks in the field to the right, notably behind the head. The patina is golden with golden highlights, especially on the reverse. Superb at Fleur de coin. By Johann Friedrich Konrad Claus, chief engraver in Hanover from 1762 to 1811. Only 6 examples are said to have been struck in gold, including one given to the King and a few known examples including the British Museum, the MET, and the J. Hamburger sale, 2 March 1908, Dr Antoine-Feill collection, No 1800. The Société Agricole de Celle was founded in 1764 to support and improve agriculture. It moved to Hanover in 1894, where it became known as the "Hanover Chamber of Agriculture".
