For the siege of Gotha and Grimmenstein Castle, where John Frederick II had taken refuge and proclaimed himself Elector of Saxony, against the advice of Emperor Maximilian II. Emperor Maximilian II entrusted Elector Augustus of Saxony with the siege. John Frederick II surrendered and spent the remaining 29 years of his life as a captive in Steyr Castle. This commemorative thaler-medal was struck to reward front-line soldiers.
