Lot no. 315
Aloise CORBAZ (1886-1964), "Couple et figurine sous un rideau violet", (ca. 1959), chalk on paper, unsigned.
H. 33 x 24 cm
Aloïse Corbaz's drawings give pride of place to a sensual imagination of imperial courts, ermine capes, rich heiresses, princely love stories and royal kisses. Born into a large, poor family in Lausanne, Aloïse dreamed of becoming a singer. Forced into exile in Germany for a love affair her family deemed scandalous, she worked as a governess at the court of Kaiser Wilhelm II. The imminence of the First World War forced her to return to Switzerland, where she was committed to a psychiatric asylum for schizophrenia, where she remained until her death. It was in this environment that Aloïse unfolded her dreamlike pictorial universe of twinkling stars, flowers, celebrations and loving embraces.
