In the preface to the 1955 sale catalogue of the studio, André Breton, in awe of Zölt's work, wrote: "In the absence of any other bibliographical details concerning A. Zölt, one can only dream of the work of Aloys Zötl. Zölt, we can only dream very freely about what may have conditioned the undertaking - a veritable feast of patience - of this dyer from Upper Austria, who, from 1832 to 1887, put such zeal into creating the most sumptuous bestiary ever seen".
