Minor foxing, repair to last folding map. Entirely original edition (first edition with 23 vignettes and not 24 for the first series), illustrated with a title vignette, 9 maps, some folding, 8 off-text colour lithographs and 2 of 3 woodcut vignettes in the text (1st series), 14 colour maps, some folding, 12 off-text woodcuts and 44 vignettes in the text (2nd series). The first accounts of the ascents made by the pioneers of the Alpine Club during the golden age of mountaineering. "The cornerstone of any collection of mountain books" (Neate). The first series was edited by John Ball and the second series by Edward Shirley Kennedy. Rare complete set in first edition and in good condition.
