Minor defects (contemporary binding). First edition, illustrated with two folding plates, one of which is coloured. One of the first descriptive works on "glaciers", which preceded the works of Gruner, Bourrit and Saussure. Includes Martel's account of his trip to the glaciers of Chamonix. Ex-libris Dr. Phil. E. Brosshard pasted on the flyleaf, ex-libris Peter Obergfell pasted on the flyleaf. A fine, very fresh copy of this rare work.
Johann Georg Altmann (1695-1758) was a Bernese scholar and clergyman, known for his studies of the Swiss Alps.
