Lot no. 56
Amalric WALTER (1870-1959) & Henri BERGE (1870-1937) Sculpture in pâte de verre, signed Amalric Walter and H. Bergé Daum Nancy, +/- 7,5 x 6cm. Note: Amalric Walter trained at the Manufacture de Sèvres before making his mark in pâte de verre. He came to prominence at the 1900 Universal Exhibition, where he was inspired by Albert Dammouse and Henri Cros. In 1905, he joined the Daum crystal works in Nancy, where, with Henri Bergé, he created over a hundred models in the Art Nouveau style. Their stained-glass windows in pâte de verre, presented at the 1909 Nancy International Exhibition, were awarded a diploma of honour to Walter, Bergé and Eugène Gall. In 1925, they won another award at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs. In 1919, Walter set up his workshop on rue Claudot in Nancy, producing almost 500 models, some after Alfred Finot, Jules Cayette, Joé Descomps-Cormier, Auguste Houillon or Auguste Rodin. The workshop closed in 1935, weakened by the Depression of 1929. After 1940, Walter left and returned to Nancy, before dying in 1959 in Lury-sur-Arnon.
