AMBROISE (Saint). Expositio in evangelium sancti Lucæ. Augsburg, Anton Sorg, 1476. In-folio, brown morocco on original wooden boards, four-ribbed spine, blue edges (modern binding). Very rare editio princeps and only incunabula edition of the commentary on the Gospel of Luke by Saint Ambrose (339-397), bishop of Milan, one of the four fathers of the Western Church. Anton Sorg (1430?-1493), who worked in Augsburg from 1475 until his death, initially worked for the printing works of the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Ulrich-et-Sainte-Afre. He owned a paper mill and also worked as an illuminator. This copy has been restored by Wood of London; the wooden sides of the original binding have been preserved (covered in brown morocco), as have two old blank endpapers. Handwritten reference from the Royal Library of Bavaria in Munich: Inc. typ. N°1951 (cancelled for duplication). From the libraries of Richard G. S. King (1871-1958), Dean of the Diocese of Derry in Ireland, with bookplate; Estelle Doheny (1987, I, No. 43), with bookplate; and Ned J. Nakles (2000, No. 48). Some marginal wetness, stains and soiling, repaired tear to first leaf, small holes causing loss of some letters on ff. 13/4 and 16/2, some leaves reinforced in inner margin.
