The dynasty was recently rewritten on the RKD database. This dynasty of painters now consists of Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder (born 1532), who gave birth to Ambrosius II (1573-1621), who in turn fathered Ambrosius Bosschaert III (1609-1645). This new name makes it possible to distinguish the different generations, whereas previously the founder of the dynasty, Ambrosius Bosschaert (born 1532), and his son Ambrosius (1573-1621) were both called the Elder. Fred Meijer states that our painting is characteristic of the manner of Ambrosius Bosschaert the Younger (now identified as Ambrosius Bosschaert III) and dates from the years 1630-1635, whereas in 1984 Sam Segal thought that our panel was the result of a collaboration between Abraham II Bosschaert and Ambrosius Bosschaert the Younger, both sons of Ambrosius I (1573-1621), now identified as Ambrosius II). The lizard motif is not unusual for Bosschaert. It appears, for example, in a painting recently sold, dated 16301.
