Amélie Ulrika Sofia von Schwerin (1819 Färlöv/Sweden - 1897 Düsseldorf)
Tree-lined river landscape with cows, hay cart and shepherdess
This representative work by the German-Swedish painter combines a masterful atmospheric landscape with a highly lively depiction of animals. Amélie von Schwerin received her artistic training privately in Düsseldorf from 1855-1858, probably with Hans Fredrik Gude or Adolph Tidemand; together with the Norwegian painter and Gude pupil Anders Askevold, she went to Munich in 1877/78 to continue her training in the studio of the animal painter Friedrich Voltz. Even before her stay in Munich, the painter belonged to a small group of generally recognised female artists. From 1859 onwards, she was represented with her paintings not only in the Düsseldorf exhibitions and galleries, but also at major exhibitions in Berlin, Bremen, Dresden, Gothenburg, Hanover and Stockholm, at the World Exhibitions in Vienna in 1873 and in Philadelphia in 1876. Oil on canvas; signed and dated on the lower left. 1873. 75.5 cm x 123 cm. Probably original frame.
