Lot no. 1007
AMULET CAPSULE - former Kofler-Truniger collection Probably the Middle East or Egypt, approx. 3rd century BC (?). Gold sheet hammered into the shape of an Egyptian-style head, probably Hathor, surrounded by a uraeus snake. Partly braided gold wires with pearl and rivet decoration. Probably formerly with a gemstone on the back. Eyelets on the sides. L 3.4 cm. Total weight 9.7 g. Dellen. Provenance: - Former collections of Ludwig Marx, Mainz, and Albert Sieck, Munich. - Auction Dr. F. X. Weizinger & Co., Munich, October 28–31, 1918, lot 966, ill. 34. - Probably auction Theodor Fischer, Lucerne, June 13–17, 1950, lot 805 (acquired December 1, 1950, according to index card) - Collection Ernst and Marthe Kofler-Truniger (1903–1990 & 1918–1999), Lucerne (inv. no. K740), acquired at the above auction. - Swiss private collection, Lucerne, acquired from the above in ca. 1974. - By inheritance in the same Swiss family collection, Lucerne. Exhibited: Kunsthaus Zurich, E. and M. Kofler-Truniger Collection, Lucerne, June 7–August 2, 1964, No. 389 (with exhibition catalog). Literature: Kunsthaus Zürich (ed.): Collection E. and M. Kofler-Truniger, Lucerne. Exhibition catalog, June 7–August 2, 1964, p. 41, No. 389 (without ill.). According to the index card, there seems to be some disagreement regarding the dating and geographical location. According to Weizinger's auction catalog from 1918, the amulet is of Etruscan origin with Egyptian stylistic influences. Prof. Hafner, who advised Kofler-Truniger, locates the amulet in Egypt or the Middle East and dates it to around the 3rd century AD. Kofler-Truniger cites Kazimierz Michalowski's contribution to excavations in Palmyra from his own research. Similar jewelry can be seen on stone sculptures there, and therefore Kofler-Truniger does not rule out a Palmyra origin (cf. Kazimierz Michalowski: Palmyre: fouilles polonaises 1959. Vol. I, Warsaw 1960, p. 101, figs. 109 & 110). * The full tax is charged on this item marked *, i.e. VAT is charged on the sum will be refunded to Purchasers providing a validly stamped export declaration.
