An Islamic mortar with silver inlays
Cylindrical mortar with protruding upper rim. Decorated with two rows of six teardrop motifs alternating with silver inlay knot ornaments and birds. A calligraphic inscription along the upper rim.
H 13.3, D 13.6 cm, weight c. 4.2 kg. The tapering pestle with a rounded grip and bands of decoration with calligraphy and teardrop motifs. The upper section defective (presumably a casting flaw). L 21.5 cm.
The base slightly rounded due to use.
Attributed to Khorasan/Iran, 12th - 13th C.
Engraved cast bronze, silver inlays, some minor verdigris due to corrosion.
