The Espérance brewery was founded in Strasbourg in 1746 by the Hatt family. Its traditional beer is Ancre, named after the anchor in the bell tower of the nearby church of Saint Guillaume, a symbol of hope for boatmen. In 1964, the first advertising campaigns were carried out for the Ancre brand, which was then exported to around fifty countries. 1972 saw Heineken acquire the brewery.
