ANDREA FIGARI
Sassari, 1858 - Genoa, 1945
Ligurian Navy
Signed A Figari bottom left
Oil on canvas, 142X177 cm
Andrea Figari is a tireless seeker of truth. In his work, the sublime poetry of the sea, described with great force, is captured. Nicknamed the Tempest of the 19th century, he proved to be a painter of impressionist taste, concentrating his art on the study of light and atmospheric vibration. He attended the Ligustica Academy of Fine Arts in Genoa, under the guidance of Tammar Luxoro, completing his studies in 1895. He took part in the activities of the group of painters of the Rivara School, painting landscapes of the Piedmont valleys, where the experiences of realism and post-impressionism distanced him from academic dictates. He was on friendly terms with other painters from Genoa such as Angelo Costa, Cesare Viazzi, Giuseppe Pennasilico and Guido Meineri, all regulars at the Carlo Felice Theatre café in Galleria Mazzini. From 1878, he exhibited at the Society for the Promotion of Fine Arts in Genoa and from 1882, at that in Turin.
