ANDREA TAVERNIER Turin, 1858 - Grottaferrata, 1932 Birch trees Signed A Tavernier lower right Oil on canvas, 47.5X65 cm Provenance: Turin, Fogliato Art Gallery Turin, private collection The present painting depicting a landscape animated by birch trees under an intense sky is a testimony to Tavernier's innovative approach in reinterpreting nature outside the canons of traditional verism. The material effect of the surface shows affinities, albeit not coincidental, with certain aspects of the Divisionist movement. His studies at the Accademia Albertina, under the guidance of, among others, Andrea Gastaldi, contributed to forming an artist bound to a classical tradition. Tavernier moved to Rome and later along the Adriatic Riviera, where he found the straightforward and ideal luminosity that characterised his en plein air works. He debuted in 1884 at the Promotrice delle Belle Arti in Turin with Spring Dew and regularly participated in exhibitions in Turin until 1923, as well as in the Circolo degli Artisti exhibitions between 1885 and 1916.
